Fall Letter Tracing

A couple weeks ago, the kids used cinnamon sticks and oatmeal to practice their letter writing. (sorry I'm a little late posting!)

Some of our friends were not able to write many letters so they drew pictures in stead. Either way, they were improving their fine motor skills and preparing to be great writers!

Our New Light Table!

I would be lying if I said I didn't squeal a little when the box was delivered! But look at it ... I mean, it is pretty awesome!

This table top light table gives us another great platform to practice a ton of different skills. The kids in the picture are using translucent cubes to sort and make patterns. Today we used the tablet to talk about same and different.

So exciting!!!

Under the table drawings

The kids like anything that seems unconventional - like drawing pictures under the table!
I taped big pieces of paper under the table and had the kids free color.

Such an easy activity that builds fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and creativity!

Owl Number Sets

We have been practicing counting to 10 starting at different numbers. We have also been working on indentifying the numbers before or numbers after. We used these owl number sets to practice before and after.

Where are the animals hiding?

We are just wrapping up our Farm Unit!
We used "piles of straw" and animal sticks to help us practice our shapes.

One student hid the animal behind one of the straw piles.

The other student picked a shape and looked behind it.

If they were correct, they found the hiding animal!

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake - Shaving Cream Cupcakes

I absolutely love the If You Give A ... books. I think they are my favorite. Although none of them will compare to the Mouse, the other ones are pretty awesome. :)

We read If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff.

Our book extension activity, I think, has become my new favorite "shaving cream and glue" project. We made our own cupcakes! The shaving cream/glue mixture was the frosting. Then while it was still wet, we added sprinkles!

The final products were adorable!

(usually I post the kids artwork, and not my own, but their pictures were still VERY wet and they were hard to move)

I love when new art project ideas turn out - teaching success!

Playdoh Dog Food Game

We have started our Pets Theme. This is definitely one of the kids' favorites because almost all of them have something to contribute!

We played a game where the kids used their fine motor skills to roll Playdoh balls to make pretend pieces of dog food. I rolled the dice and the kids rolled the number of balls that showed.

The kids could have done this all day!

How Will I Get to School This Year?

I can't believe school has started already! :)

I absolutely love class-made books! We make tons of them throughout the year. We were able to make our first one on the second day of school - pretty impressive ;)

We read How Will I Get to School This Year? by Jerry Pallotta and David Biedrzycki. Then we thought of a funny way that we could get to school. They were pretty cute!

Insects!

There are insects everywhere in our room! :) Good thing they are cute!

We practiced our letters by using our GIANT fly swatters to swat insects.

The kids made patterns using bees and butterflies.

We flipped over number insects using butterfly shaped flippers!

Space Week!

We have been talking about Space in our room  - planets, stars, astronauts, space ships ... they love it all! This has been a really great theme for us to explore more non-fiction books. It is amazing how much the kids can pick up on just from looking at pictures!

Here is our Earth painting. The kids used shaving cream and paint to make these awesome paintings.

We read If I Were an Astronaut by: Eric Braun. We talked about all of the things that might be fun to do if you were an astronaut. Then we made our astronauts. We used clear plastic plates to look like helmets.

Dr. Seuss Week!

We did a lot of silly and exciting things during Dr. Seuss week :)
Here are some highlights
We traced letters in sprinkles ...
And tried making new colors using crazy droppers!

Penguin Waddling!

While learning about penguins, the kids used balls to help them waddling on the Penguin Path!
